How to Get Rid of Maggots in a Garbage Bin (and Keep Them Out)

The fast cleanup method for a maggot-infested garbage bin, why it happens every July, and the prevention habits that actually work.

How to Get Rid of Maggots in a Garbage Bin (and Keep Them Out)

Few things ruin a summer morning like opening the garbage bin into a maggot colony. It feels like a hygiene failure, but it is really just biology plus heat: flies found protein, laid eggs, and warm weather did the rest in under 48 hours. Here is the fix and, more usefully, the prevention.

The cleanup, step by step

  1. Empty the bin completely. If collection day is close, double-bag the worst material and keep the lid shut until then.
  2. Kill what remains with heat. Pour a kettle or two of boiling water down the sides and into the seams. Boiling water is the cheapest, most effective treatment, and it reaches the crevices where larvae hide.
  3. Scrub with hot soapy water, then rinse with a vinegar solution, roughly one part vinegar to two parts water, which also knocks down the odour that attracts the next generation of flies.
  4. Dry it open in the sun. Larvae and eggs need moisture; a bone-dry bin interior is hostile territory.

Prevention that actually works

Starve the flies. Meat scraps, bones, and pet waste are the magnets. Freeze meat and fish scraps in a bag and drop them in the bin the morning of collection, not days before.

Bag everything, tie everything. Flies need direct access to food to lay eggs. Sealed bags break the cycle on their own most of the time.

Mind the lid. A warped lid or an overfilled bin that will not close is an open invitation. Keep the bin out of direct sun if you can; heat accelerates everything.

Rinse on a schedule. A quick monthly hot-water rinse with a splash of vinegar through the summer keeps the bin from building up the residue that starts the cycle.

When the problem is bigger than the bin

Maggots showing up during a big cleanout usually mean food waste is mixed into general junk, often from a fridge purge. Keep food waste in your municipal green bin stream, and keep project waste in a project bin; our rundown of what can and cannot go in a rental bin draws the lines. Rental bins full of dry renovation debris and household junk, the loads we haul every day, simply do not attract flies the way kitchen waste does, and prompt pickup at the end of your rental keeps it that way.
