Old appliances occupy a strange category: too heavy to move casually, too valuable as scrap to be pure garbage, and in the case of anything that cools, legally complicated. Here is the map.
First, know your two categories
Dry appliances: stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves. These are straightforward: mostly steel, fully accepted in rental bins, and genuinely wanted by scrap metal collectors.
Refrigerant appliances: fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers. These contain refrigerant gases that are regulated, and they cannot go into a bin or general disposal until a certified technician has evacuated the refrigerant and tagged the unit. This is the rule that catches people out.
The easy exits
Retailer haul-away. Buying the replacement? Most appliance retailers offer old-unit removal with delivery. It is the single easiest option and handles the refrigerant question for you.
Scrap collectors. Working or not, dry appliances have real metal value. Local scrap collectors will often pick up a washer or stove from the curb or garage quickly and free; a posting with the word scrap does most of the work.
Municipal programs. Many Ontario municipalities take appliances at waste depots, including refrigerant units, sometimes with a fee that covers the refrigerant recovery. Check your municipality's page for the local arrangement.
Appliances in a bigger cleanout
When appliances are part of a renovation or full cleanout, the bin handles the dry ones without ceremony: stoves, dishwashers, and laundry machines are on the accepted list for every bin we rent, as covered in what can and cannot go in a rental bin. Fridges and freezers join the bin only after refrigerant removal, so book the technician before the bin arrives, or route the fridge through a depot or retailer instead and bin everything else.
Moving them without injury
Appliance dollies exist for a reason; rent or borrow one. Tape doors shut, drain washers and dishwashers the day before, and never carry a fridge on your back down stairs over a disagreement with physics. If a kitchen reno is generating the appliances, our renovation cleanup timeline covers sequencing the bin around demo day, and the size guide makes sure the cabinets fit in beside the stove.
