Bin placement gets decided in the thirty seconds before delivery more often than it should. A few minutes of planning gets you a spot that protects your property, speeds your project, and keeps the municipality out of it.
What the truck needs
A roll-off truck backs up and tilts its bed, so the bin needs a reasonably straight approach, a firm level surface, and clear overhead: no low wires, no overhanging branches the truck would fight. Most driveways qualify easily. Gravel and firm rural laneways usually work too, which is how we deliver everywhere from Carp to Roseneath; when in doubt, describe your laneway at booking and we will plan it together.
Choosing the spot
Driveway is the default and the best option for almost everyone: firm, legal without paperwork, and close to the work. Boards go under every bin we place, so the surface, asphalt, concrete, or interlock, is protected from both weight and rollers.
Close to the work beats close to the road. Every metre between debris and bin gets walked dozens of times. For renovations, that means tight to the garage or the tear-out side of the house; for roofing, tight to the eaves, as covered in the shingle guide.
Leave working room. You need space to swing bags over the rim and, at the end, the truck needs clearance to hook up again. Do not box the bin in with the car you meant to move.
When permits enter the picture
On your own property: no permit, full stop. On a municipal street or boulevard: that is public land, and Ontario municipalities require a permit for it; Ottawa, for instance, issues temporary road-occupancy permits, and Toronto and Kitchener have their own street-placement processes. Rules and fees vary town to town, so if the street is genuinely your only option, tell us when you book and we will point you at your municipality's process. Most customers never need this; the driveway solves it.
The two-minute placement plan
Pick the spot, measure that a car-length-plus fits, check overhead, move vehicles before the delivery window, and leave a note or pin if you will not be home. Our driver places it exactly where you asked, boards down, ready to load. More first-timer detail lives in How Does Dumpster Rental Work?
